Misal (For Misal Pav)

Misal pav is a popular dish from Maharashtra, India. It consists of Misal (a spicy curry usually made of sprouted beans) and pav (a type of Bun). It is well known street food in west India, particularly for its High spice content. It is loved by people living in Maharashtra.

Misal (Part 1)

  • 1 Cup Black Eyed Peas
  • 1 Cup Sabut moong (Whole Green gram)
  • Oil for cooking
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 medium Onion; Coarse paste
  • 1 tbsp fresh Ginger-Garlic paste
  • 2 Tomatoes; finely chopped
  • ½ tsp Methi Powder (Fenugreek Powder); Roasted
  • 1 tsp Cumin Powder; Roasted
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder; Roasted
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 3 Cups water
  • Salt to taste

Misal (Part 2); Tarri (Curry)

  • ½ Cup Sunflower Oil
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • ½ tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 medium Onion; Finely Chopped/ Grated.
  • 1 tbsp Ginger-Garlic paste
  • 1 tsp Garam masala
  • 1 tsp Goda masala
  • 1 tsp Cumin powder; Roasted
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder; Roasted
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 3 -4 tsp Red Chili powder (or to taste)
  • Dash of water

To Assemble


Misal (Part 1)

  • Soak the Grains for at least 6 hours. Pressure cook them till almost done.

*Please don’t overcook the grains. 1 Whistle is enough followed by 5 minutes of cooking on low heat, if grains are soaked properly.

  • Heat 2 tbsp Oil in a Pan/Kadhai . Temper with mustard seeds and Cumin seeds and allow it splutter.
  • Add Onion paste and Ginger-Garlic paste. Sauté till slightly brown.
  • Add Tomatoes and cook for 5-10 minutes or till tomatoes are soft.
  • Add Turmeric powder, Cumin powder, Coriander powder, Fenugreek powder, Garam Masala powder, Red Chili Powder and Salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes or till you get delicious aroma of spices.
  • Now add cooked grains (Black Eyed peas and whole Green Gram).Mix well and Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add water and cook on high heat till water is reduced to half.
  • Part one of Misal is done.

Misal (Part 2); Tarri (Curry)

  • Heat oil in a deep pan. Temper with Cumin Seeds, Mustard Seeds and Bay leaf. Allow it to splutter.
  • Add Onion and Ginger-Garlic Paste. Cook till raw aroma disappears.
  • Add Turmeric Powder, Cumin Powder, Coriander Powder Goda Masala and Garam Masala. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add Red Chili Powder and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add ¼ Cup Water and Cook the mixture on high heat for a minute. Switch off the heat.

To Assemble

  • In a shallow dish put the Grains Mixture (Misal Part1) topped with tarri (Misal Part2)

*Quantity of Tarri (Misal Part2) can be altered as per the spice level you prefer.

  • Sprinkle Mixed Indian Fried Snacks, Chickpea Noodles, Onion, Coriander leaves and lemon juice on it.
  • Serve with Fresh Pav (Bun). ENJOY!
